Wardrobe Malfunction

Photobucket

Hey ladies, I need your help. As I don't have my own place - I just have a bedroom- I don't have a huge amount of space. My wardrobe well more correctly my clothes seem to be taking over my room. I seriously have no where else to keep my belongings and I find it so hard to find any of my clothes in the morning. My shoes now have a mind of their own and spend more time on my floor than they do on my feet, due to only being able to find one shoe. I have even left the house in odd shoes due to this disorganisation. So I need your expertise.

How do I keep my wardrobe organised and my shoes in some sort of order, when I have such a small amount of space?

Do you guys have any tips?

Oh my, looks like you do need some help! I organize my clothes by type and color. I usually fold my shirts, hang skirts/dresses/jeans, and have separate storage for my shoes. It's really easy to find everything when it's sorted by color! Hope that helps :)

Holy Cra* K! Your wardrobe is literally bursting to infinite proportions!

I know it can be hard when you have a small space to work with. The best thing to do is re-evaluate what's in your wardrobe first, save, ditch, charity...

Next, get some of those vacuum bags (clear) and haul your summer stuff in there, vacuum out the air and put away in the loft til next spring at least!

Having too many shoes is a nightmare, i know! I'd put polaroids of your shoes somewhere on the box so you can see what you've got or do some kinda inventory! - Thumbnail pics on an A3 sheet of all the shoes and then ditch the boxes and get a good extendable shoe rack and line them up neatly.
If you're going to be mean, whenever you buy something, you have to throw something away! Hard!!!

my dearest, you need to google economical storage without use of space or something like that...this needs to be resolved somehow!!! http://www.fashionablenotebook.blogspot.com

One more thing, like 'pancake stacker' mentioned, it really helps putting your clothes in department order, something that's done in most fash pr/buying offices.
Jackets/coats, shirts, jumpers (fold), jeans (fold and hang), trousers, skirts etc... separate into plain and print so the eye can see much clearer.

i vote, sort out the stuff you're not going to wear until summer fold it away under the bed. anything that doesn't crease easily, fold and keep in a slide out box under the bed as well as the shoes in a separate one!
if you don't have an under the bed, just get stackables :)

Love your wardrobe, maybe you can buy some boxes to put the summer clothes in?

Gertrude said...

Wow that is some malfunction ;) You can build/buy a shoe rack and put all shoes on it. I agree with Fashion Queen as well... clothes which you won't wear this season can be removed from the wardrobe :)

Get yourself to IKEA! You need floor to ceiling storage - shelves, shelves and more shelves up as high as you can get them (above your door, anywhere you can!), then you can put your shoes on them and have wardrobe space underneath. Could you put storage under your bed? My sister's boyf put their bed on blocks so there was enough room to put storage boxes underneath (makes you feel very regal sleeping in a high bed as well!). Good luck - think you're going to need it!!!! xxx

Wow sister...you need a closetvention. What works best for me is separating by style...Dresses together, casual shirts, dressy shirts, pants, jeans and so on and so on...then I sort of know where to look depending on where I am going and my mood.
Good luck you have some serious work ahead of you.

How about something like this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/IKEA-HANGING-WARDROBE-ORGANISER-5-COMPARTMENTS-WHITE-/170555433855

It looks good because you can just hang it up, perhaps on the side of your wardrobe, or a spare space and it creates extra space for you to store things and wont make the room look cluttered, like perhaps it would with another actual wardrobe. Probably easier to put p aswel haha xo

Yeeap..my last post is perfect for you!!! in my opinion you should divide your clothes in pants, tees, shirts, skirts and sweaters.
for shoes a possibility could be put them on you bedroom door, using a grid attached on it..
it's a bit difficult for me to explain this idea... u__u

sort clothes by season, and fold the sweaters, pants, and put skirts, dresses, and pants on hangers.
For shoes, keep the boxes and put labels on each box, for easy retrieval.
That's my way of storing and finding my clothes more easily.

trier les vêtements par saison, et plier les pulls, pantalons, et mettre les jupes, robes, et pantalons sur des cintres.
Pour les chaussures, garder les boites, et mettre des étiquettes sur chaque boite, pour les retrouver facilement.

Jess said...

oh dearrr....my tips are. if you have enough room, maybe try getting a shoe rack?

for clothes wise maybe get an extra clothes rail.
or in ikea they do under the bed plastic covers. so sort through the clothes and put the ones you dont wear as much under your bed?

or have a sort through and see if theres anything you can give to charity shops/sell on ebay?

xxxxx

Jude said...

I roughly sort clothes by season, then by colour/type (doesn't have to be perfect, just rough groupings) - and I totally depend on shelves, shoe racks/hangers, and extra clothes rails (that you can hang off the existing one)!

I'm in the same position as you:/

Such a mess!! I have the same on my floor ;/

Laura said...

The best plan would be to make sure only your season appropriate clothes are being displayed and store the rest somewhere out of the way, like under a bed. If you have room for a shoe rack they are a really good investment! Mine was a life saver (as I too had this same problem very recently)

Anonymous said...

Oh my!! you do need some help like ASAP!! You should start investing on those plastic drawer and get some vacuum plastic that you can store your summer clothes. But before you do that, sort you clothes and see which one you dont need, either give it to charity or just sell it to friends or you can use your blog to sell some, what I did with my shoes, I packed my school books that I dont need in a box and store it somewhere or send it to local bookshop or library, and use my book shelf for my shoes, even though we live in a house, our house is pretty small that closet space is so limited, other than that, I just fold a lot of my shirt that I wear daily in a basket and grab them as I go.
I hope this help

I havent read all the comments on this post so this might already have been said! But anyways, you can get special storage things especially for this kind of issue (and WOW do you have a lot of clothes!).

You can buy something you can hang from the pole in the wardrobe. Its like a book case but not as wide... hard to explain like box shelves.. let me try and find a picture..

like this
http://images.caraselledirect.com/500w/chrome_storage_unit_filled.jpg

obviously not great if it takes up your whole wardrobe but you could get a small one and for example I have leggings in the bottom, plain tshirts next up, pjs next up, skirts next etc. And just hang up expensive stuff or stuff that doesn't like being folded.

Also you can get shoe storage shelves like this;
http://www.stacksandstacks.com/image/1_20413_zm.jpg

but it all depends on how much stuff costs and space and stuff. Just a few ideas anyway :) goodluck!

i think a massive clean out is in order!

when my closet gets crazy out of control, i pull EVERYTHING out and decide what deserves to go back in. its a chore, but well worth it in the end!

I'm in the same situation as you right now.. my room is so tiny I don't even HAVE wardrobe anymore :( LOL most of my clothes are shoved in my dads room and the rest hung on my door or thrown about the place.. it drives me mad!

I have a 'shoe bag' thing that goes under my bed.. I think it's supposed to be hung in a wardrobe or something but it's like canvas with about 20 compartments and a clear zipper cover over it so I can see what's inside, it's really annoying having to pull it in and out from under my bed though ugh.

& what about getting some of those clear bags that you put a hover over and they shrink right down? I have no idea what they're called but I keep all my clothes that I know I won't be wearing for a while in them and it saves SO much room.

haha, good pictures ;-)
I have boxes at the bottom of my closet, which I can put randomly together and exactly how I need them, where I did put small things as scarves, tights, leggings...

WOW that's a lot of clothes and shoes! I suggest organising by type of clothing for the hanging space you have and then for your shoes get some cheap shoe boxes on eBay and put photos on the front of each pair of shoes then store them anywhere they'll fit, under the bed, in the wardrobe, on the wardrobe etc! Good Luck with the organising x

Maybe get some big storage boxes for clothes you're not wearing at the moment and hide them under your bed. I have a brilliant shoe holder, it looks like a slim filing cabinet and fits loads in without taking up much room. I got it from ILVA which I don't think exists anymore but I'm sure you could get something similar from somewhere.

Hey gorgeous, thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment.
I know what you meann about having too little space for your clothes and shoes. Same with me. I have no idea what to do. Buy couple new closets or just do closet clean-ups every month... If you find a solution, let me know :)

I used to have this problem but despair no more. I got the solution - Indexing is the key. Here's how:

1. arrange them according to seasonality: get all your summer gear including shoes and put them in box well labelled for next year.

2. get all your winter gear into your wadrope including shoes.
NOTE:
if you got a nine to five, mon to fri sort of job, then arrange your weekly gear in advance and put away the rest in a box to be revisited on a special occassion say. like an x-mas party or going out.

there you have it. hope it works out for you.

I have the same problem with shoes...I keep mine neatly paired in plastic boxes under the bed. So far it has worked out. As for clothes, fold what you can and keep it by color and style. Ikea is great for organizing in small place, if you have one.
Hope this helps: )

Oh, I know how you feel. I had the same problem, when I lived in a shared appartement. I bought some big boxes to put under my bed, so at least the stuff I don´t use often (depends on the season) were out of the picture!

haha seriously your closet is insane :D
i share mine with my sister and you can imagine how it's difficult to find some space for all my clothes!
last year we've bought a dresser at ikea and some other boxes when i put all the things i'm not wearing (because it's too hot/cold or just because i don't like them anymore). well if you don't have space i guess you can put some boxes above your wardrobe and under your bed. it's an idea ;)

Storage under your bed works wonders, and in terms of clothes, get a hanging rack that you can slide them onto. Trust me, I have the exact same problem and it's taken me awhile to accomodate everything! If all else fails, just take over someone else's closet in your house :)

woah that is quite messy.
the best thing to do is have one whole day dedicated to cleaning your wardrobe...like a cleaning spree. I love them.
Shirts, shorts, jumpers and cardigans should definantly be folded and pants, skirts, blouses and dresses should be put on your hangers. you have different coloured hangers. coordinate your garments like; pink for blouse, blue for pants etc.
as for socks and undergarments, they should have a completely different draw/basket/container, seperating them from your clothes.
have a space inside your wardrobe where your shoes should be lined up side by side, front by front and so forth.

This probably sounds like a pain, but put some pumping music on whilst you do this, it actually motivates you to finish. I hope this helped somehow.

I found the solution in my supersmall uni room (less than 10 square meters maybe?) with its REALLY small closet, especially for my dozens of jackets and outerwear... solution is called IKEA and the clothes rack for like 7 pounds or less... it's perfect because you can hang many more dresses (or try to separate things, like only jackets/cardigans etc. on the rack and dresses in the clothes), and you have room for shoes underneath. I also bought many shoe-boxes and just piled them up, it looks good and I see them in just a minute. YOU CAN DO IT!!!
