Oreo: Up close & personal

Photobucket

Yes, yes, I know, i'm completely and utterly obsessed with my dog. She seriously makes me so happy that even when i've had the WORST day ever, as soon as I see her, it no longer matters. However getting a puppy is a massive commitment and sometimes she can be a massive pain in the backside. I've received a few tweets and emails from my lovely readers asking me about her breed (seen here) and saying that they want a puppy etc.
So I thought i'd share with you my experience  - getting a puppy is a HUGE lifetime commitment. A lot of people ignore this and are blinded by the cuteness of a pup, ignoring the fact that they grow up and also take up about 99% of your time.
I don't want to discourage you from getting a puppy, but the reality is, if you commute and have a full time job, then getting a dog probably isn't for you (right now, not never). You really do have to dedicate a lot of your time to the pup with regards to training and do not expect your puppy to be amazingly well behaved just because you want him/her to be.
Here are my experiences with Oreo in the last couple of months of owning her:
  • Now she's older she sheds a massive amount. I have a white house and a black dog, so hoovering everyday is a must.
  • Oreo was house trained but at 3 1/2 months she decided to change her mind and do what she wanted as and when she pleased.
  • She is an attention seeker, so if anyone is in the house she must be with them in the room with them or touching them at all times (sorry to my house mate).
  • Cleaning up after her No 1s and No2s is quite annoying!
  • I work 8 hours a day and commute 3 hours a day (see above), luckily my family have her during the day.
  • Oreo chews socks - it frustrates me no end - but I should be glad thats all she chews.
  • She likes to go out in the garden about 10 times a night - not to wee though, she just likes tricking me.
  • Dogs are a full time commitment and the decision shouldn't be taken lightly.
Having said that, if none of the above make a difference to you - Having Oreo in my life makes me so happy, seeing her running up to me when I go to pick her up from my parents house after work, nearly makes me cry (I'm a loser). In the beginning, I thought she hated me and didn't love me, but it turns out she does. Watching her attempt to be a guard dog is absolutely hilarious. When she follows me around the house (by my ankles) and sits on my lap every night whilst I watch TV, makes the fact that she just pooped under my bed, no longer matter. I absolutely adore my little trouble maker.

I would love to hear all about your pets - are you a cat or a dog person?

Aw what a cutie!
We have 37 dogs at my Fellas, His mum is a vetinary nurse so we rescue dogs that are going to be put down due to the pounds being over filled (yeah, that does really happen!)
They're such a handful though! (they're all in big in kennels down the yard) & we have a puppy in the house called peanut, he's an Italian greyhound & absolutely crazy!!

So cute. I'd love a puppy but work too much and probably won't have a garden when I move to London. You can't have it all.

Ah so cute!
I'm definitely a dog person, my parents had dogs my whole life, my puppy is the thing I miss most now I've moved out - I say puppy, he's six stone of Rottweiler, but he still thinks he can sit on your lap :)
